Wedding Music Planning

Music is an important component of any wedding ceremony and reception. The songs you choose during the ceremony, after the ceremony, and during the reception can spell the difference between a truly memorable event or one which will easily be forgotten.

If you are having a religious ceremony (e.g. a mass for Catholics), it is important to check whether the venue which you have reserved will provide a choir or a musical ensemble as part of the package. If that is the case, then that should generate some cost savings for you, not unless you would still want to hire a choir on your own.

Assuming that you will need to take care of the music for your religious ceremony, you will need to answer the following questions: Do you want to hire a choir or do you want to just have instrumental music? If you are hiring a choir, do you prefer that they sing a capella or with instrumental accompaniment?

Whether you are hiring a choir or a musical group on your own or not, it is important to check them out so you can listen to them. Some choirs are willing to set an appointment and sing some songs for you so you can assess for yourself whether they are what you are looking for. If you know that the choir will be singing at a particular wedding before your own, you can also go to the venue for that wedding so you can listen to them at the actual ceremony.

If you are Catholic, it is good to check how strict the church will be with the singing or playing of “popular” songs during the actual nuptial mass. Some churches will require you to restrict the wedding mass songs to religious or church songs, with the more “popular” songs just reserved for the picture-taking after the mass.

It is during the photo sessions (with the entourage and the guests) that the couple can really choose their favorite or theme songs to be performed. Make sure you to discuss your chosen songs with your choir or music group to ensure that they are familiar with the songs that you have singled out.

At the reception, piped-in music (if any) at the venue must not be too loud or overpowering to allow your guests to converse or to mingle with each other. Classical or instrumental music (piped in or performed live by a chosen group) is always a good bet. For your wedding reception program, you can have special song numbers done by relatives and friends or you can hire professional singers to do a spot number lasting about 15 minutes or you can specify or agree on the number of songs.

If you wish to have dancing after the formal program and the reception festivities and activities, you should choose your song for your first dance as husband and wife carefully. You can choose your theme song or some of the romantic songs like “The Way You Look Tonight.” For the dancing part of your program, have a combination of modern, standards, and dance music played to ensure that most of your guests will find music that they will like to dance to. You can consider hiring a live band to provide the music for your dancing.

Music is a universal language. Chosen carefully, the songs that you play during your wedding ceremony and reception will make the affair more memorable and will make your guests enjoy the event more. You can even play good music as you open some of your gifts right there and then…
